looking back...

Sometime back I had said that 2009 was the best year in my life...well, that was until 2010 happened! I can now safely say that the year going by was indeed the very best time of my life. :)

Now, the year is closing in to an end, and in retrospect,  without spending words, I would say that it has given much...a lot...lot more that I would have happily accepted...that was 2010.
May be I will sit down sometime and write up some lines explaining why it was the best, but that's for later...

Hoping that it gets better...looking forward and wishing a very Happy New Year to all and to myself!

:)

Bangla in Windows XP - The Final Complete Solution

After much R&D on the topic and aided by valuable inputs from my friends, here I present the final complete solution for seamless reading and writing in Bangla font on PCs running Windows XP.

1. Writing in Bangla font (also applicable for Windows Vista/7):
Use Avro keyboard. It's free and it's totally awesome. Download link: http://www.omicronlab.com/download/setup_avrokeyboard_4.5.1.exe

2. Reading Bangla font:  There are two ways to configure XP for Bangla.
(a) Using XP CD: http://www.omicronlab.com/docs/configuring-windows-xp-for-bangla.html
(b) Without XP CD (recommended): Using iComplex . Download link: http://omicronlab.com/download/tools/iComplex_2.0.0.exe

3. Solution for small Bangla font problem:  Download Modified Vrinda font from http://null.dev.tripod.com/misc_files/Vrinda.ttf (right click, save link as)
Replace ur original Vrinda font which already exists in C:/WINDOWS/fonts/.

Reverse plagiarism!

Chanced upon this interesting piece of info on the net.

This Romanian song, Vorbesc Cu tine Nu Ma Auzi by Liviu Mititelu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUpF9-BKWIM is a complete beat by beat rip-off of the famous Bangla song "Bhromor koio giya" by Radharaman Dutta, rendered by Fuad/Armeen Musa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pFPUIDopyw

So much for desi rip-offs from the west...

Our new song: Nisshobdo Kolotan is out now... :)

After a looooong hiatus (yes one full semester gone by since "tomar gaan", pardon the workload :P) our new song "nisshobdo kolotan" is out on SoundClick! check it out...

This time, we have a awesome new lyricist in Dibyendu Hazra, our very own Dibyenduda.

There is a story behind the song. Earlier this year there was an academic tour to Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh organised by Physics society , dept. of Physics, IITK, which Dibyenduda (and me too) was part of. It was a truly wonderful, relaxing experience for us all. In the words of the lyricist, ''I was so tired of the monotonic life of IIT Kanpur, and then I was overwhelmed by the serenity and tranquility that the natural beauty of Pachmarhi offered to me. This song is a mere manifestation of that splendid feeling." So...we have the song!

It is a sort of 'easy listening' type of song. So... get it here: http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9133902
Direct mp3 download link info can be found on this page too.

As always, totally home-made, on our comps, and at our homes!

Year round-up 2: shoot'em up - view from behind the lens.

Things that made 2009 a oh-so-good year, in no particular order.
Part 2 today:

Finally I got to be the shooter rather than the one getting shot! Yes, I fulfilled a long-cherished dream, having my own camera. I got my very first camera, the Canon SX100 IS, right at the very second day of 2009. For the uninitiated, the specs and exactly why this camera rocks can be found here. In a few words, the chief attraction of this one is the 10x zoom range going upto 360mm and the complete set of manual controls, among a host of other pro features, coming in a decently compact package.

Some glimpses of the exploits that followed can be found in my Orkut profile.

As they say, a picture speaks a thousand words, so this write-up ends right here, letting the pictures speak for themselves. Signing off with this pic below, which is my personal favorite. I call this one 'hope'. This is the first publication of this pic. The people in the pic are my brother and my little sister.

Year round-up 1: Back to Bollywod - when music blended with poetry and bowled me over

Things that made 2009 a oh-so-good year, in no particular order.
Part 1 today:

Kaise bataayein, kyun tujhko chahe, yaara bataa na paaye.
Baatein dilo ki, dekho jo baaki, aankhein tujhe samjhaye.
Tu jaane na...

Tu Jaane Na (unplugged)
Movie: Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009)
Music Director: Pritam Chakraborty
Lyricist: Irshad Kamil
Artistes: Kalilash Kher, Paresh, Naresh.

Sometimes in life, somethings just hit you. It was late October last year when my dear pal Partho brought this song to  my notice. I immediately got hold of it, and, straightway, I was hit.

I have little (no) penchant for poetry and I rarely go for songs just because of good lyrics. The first thing on my priority list is always melody, second comes the arrangement, third, the rendering of the artiste, and lyrics comes a distant fourth. But the poetic appeal of this particular number simply left me enthralled.

Each line of the song is so perfect, each of the words express the emotions they mean to so beautifully. Every time I listen to a line and feel that this is the best part of the song, and then the next one follows, and there I go again. I have come across a few other (Bollywood) songs with some beautiful lyrics, which are just amazing works of poetry (combined with awesome music); Chandni roop ki (Dus), Sun ri sakhi (Hum se hai muqabla), to name a few. This one definitely ranks among the very top. Hats off to Mr. Kamil.

And of course Kailash has put all his soul into this performance and Pritam has done a real good job on the melody (I still don't know where he lifted this one from... :P)

This song definitely was pretty much responsible for taking me back to Bollywood in 2009, after I had veered  much more towards Bangla and English stuff in the recent past. :)
